On this day we remember our dear friend and colleague, Lincoln Brower. Lincoln was an extraordinary man, as a scientist and conservationist, and as a kind and generous human being. His curiosity and care for the natural world, and for monarchs in particular, fueled his work resulting in an enormous legacy in scientific discoveries, conservation initiatives, and personal interactions that encouraged others towards their best.
Many articles have been written about Lincoln's remarkable life. We highlight two here. One piece ("Lincoln Brower, Champion for Monarchs") describes his huge influence in the scientific community, beautifully illustrated by his extensive network of collaborators (see Figure 1 in piece and also shown below). The other ("Lincoln P. Brower: Of Monarchs and Men") features an interview with Lincoln reflecting on his life, in his own voice. We hope you enjoy getting to know him a bit better.
To honor Lincoln and his contributions, we continue his legacy through the Lincoln P. Brower Awards, supporting undergraduate and graduate students researching monarch butterflies and their habitat. Since the program's inception in 2019, it has provided funds to 12 students exploring various aspects of monarch biology and conservation, encouraging them just as Lincoln would have done. We know Lincoln would be proud of these students and thrilled to support their work.
