Summer 2012 Reforestation: 17,657 Trees Planted

Our ongoing collaboration with Alternare and CIGA (UNAM’s Center for Research in Environmental Geography) continues engaging communities within the Reserve in reforestation. With funding provided by MBF, this past summer, ten groups from the indigenous communities of Francisco Serrato and Crescencio Morales planted 17,657 trees in 20 hectares within the buffer zone of the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve using seedlings from both community and commercial nurseries.

Most of the communities had also participated in last year’s reforestation and an additional group of local school teachers and children joined us planting seedlings in an area where a landslide occurred in 2010.
